I was surprised to run into Slocumb at Lomita Station. “What the hell’s an Ops lieutenant working Saturday for?”

Deac looked behind him to clear the hallway where we stood, not far from the captain’s office. “Jesus, this crazy broad has me doing all kinds of goofy shit. Today we’re going to a car show—and that’s not too bad—but last weekend we went to a goddam soccer tournament, if you can imagine that. Anything to support the community, she says. We hand out goddam stickers and baseball cards and shit like that and call it outreach.”

I chuckled and shook my head.

“Now tell me, how the hell did you get rolled up to Lomita?”

Deac again cleared the hallway with a furtive glance while backing up to lean against the wall, a grin stretched across his face. “Well, it’s not that big of a deal, but in short I threatened to kick another lieutenant’s ass. He cried about it to the captain, who decided he couldn’t bury it, so he wrote me up and that has to be reviewed by the chief. Well, she likes me—”

“You’re talking about Chief Tanner.”

He nodded. “—so she says, ‘I can’t sweep this under the rug, but I don’t want to lose a good lieutenant either.’ She tells me she’s going to send me to Lomita to work for Captain Russell until they fill in that spot with a new Operations lieutenant. Tanner says, ‘She’s a little kooky, but she means well.’ So, that’s the score. I work here six months and keep my mouth shut, and I’m back in Detective Division on the next transfer.”

“So you’re in the penalty box.”

“Exactly.”

We waited until a young uniformed deputy passed by. I said, “What was the story? Why did you threaten the other lieutenant?”

Slocumb smirked. “It really was nothing major, but this lieutenant had asked about going to Santa Barbara for a training gig, and I told him no, because I was going to be out on vacation that week, so he needed to stay in town. See, one of us had to always be available, since we’re always on call. Well, I’m down in San Diego, and I get a call in the middle of the night about some off-duty shit one of our detectives got involved in. I tell them, call Hall, he’s got the on-call. They said, no, he’s in Santa Barbara at a training class.

“To say I was a little pissed is an understatement. I don’t know how bad this off-duty thing is going to be, how many days I’m going to be dealing with it, so me and the wife pack up and drive home in the middle of the night and I go into work to handle this bullshit.

“When I see Hall the next week, I confront him about it, ask why the hell he went ahead and put in for that training, when I told him I couldn’t cover. He tells me he had gone to the captain and got permission. So I
